Urban design is a crucial component of creating livable and sustainable communities. We had the opportunity to sit down with Colin from 546 Architecture, one of the leading architects for our Steelix on 188th project, to get his perspective on urban design and why it matters.
According to Colin, a well-designed space is one that attracts people. “You can always tell or identify a well-designed space simply by how many people are there,” he said. “We are naturally drawn to these places – where we are together, where we can live together, and work and play together.”
Colin’s observation highlights a critical aspect of urban design: its impact on social interaction. The way we design our cities can either promote or hinder social interaction. A well-designed community creates opportunities for people to come together, interact, and build relationships. (We agree!)
For Colin, good urban design means that it is inclusive and accessible to everyone. “To be good urban design means that is for everyone,” he said. A well-designed city should be accessible to all, regardless of their age, ability, or socioeconomic status.
